Who is God?
At the very essence of our Catholic Faith is the belief in One God. God is the Supreme Being and Creator of all that we can and cannot see.
This great God, Who is beyond our understanding, is not far from us. There are ways in which we can come to know Him. Jesus reveals to us the Truth of God’s existence, love, and wisdom in Sacred Scripture (supernatural revelation). God also reveals Himself in nature, as the Creator of all that exists, and as Source of order (natural revelation). In order to establish and deepen our relationship with God, however, we must pray, and do so as often as we can.
God is perfectly happy, and in His goodness, He invites us to share in that happiness through prayer. Just as interaction and communication are necessary for any kind of relationship between two people to develop and grow, so is prayer essential in establishing and maintaining a relationship with God.
We can’t fully comprehend God because He is greater than us and our intelligence is limited, but there are qualities we can use to describe Him, based on what we know about other created beings and things we can actually comprehend. We refer to these characteristics as attributes:
