Samson and Delilah by Gerard van Honthorst
We have already learned about the first five books of the Bible, which are called the Books of Law. These books tell us about what God wanted for His people. In Genesis, we learned how God created the world and then how Adam and Eve sinned and closed the doors to Heaven. In Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, we learned how Moses saved the Israelites from slavery and also received the Ten Commandments from God.
In this lesson, we will learn about Joshua, Samson, Ruth, and Samuel. Joshua brought down the walls of Jericho, and Ruth was a Jewish girl who became Queen of Persia. Samson defeated the Philistines, and Samuel becomes a prophet.
Last week, we learned that Moses led the Israelites through the desert for forty years. In the end, Moses himself didn’t actually make it into the Promised Land.
When Moses died, God chose a man named Joshua to be the new leader of the Israelites. Joshua would lead the Israelites into the Promised Land. God told Joshua that all of the land from the Mediterranean Sea to the Euphrates River would belong to the Israelites. This land was called Canaan.
The people that lived in Canaan did not want the Israelites take over their land. They were a very sinful people that refused to show sorrow for any of their terrible sins.
Joshua was worried about how he would be able to claim Canaan for the Israelites. God told Joshua:
Be strong and courageous. Do not forget any of my commandments. Do not turn to the right or left and you will prosper. Keep speaking my Words and meditate on them night and day and you will have success in everything you do!
Joshua knew he had to take over the city of Jericho. It was a large city with a big tall wall around it. In order to get an idea of just how big of a job this was going to be, Joshua sent two people to spy on Jericho. When the spies got inside Jericho, they met a woman named Rahab, who helped hide them.
The people in Jericho knew that the Israelites would soon be there to take over their land. The King of Jericho was suspicious of the spies, and so he sent guards to catch them. Rahab was smart and had the spies hide up on top of her roof where the guards wouldn’t think to look.
The spies agreed to protect Rahab’s family and told her to tie a red cord by her window; that way they’d be spared when the fighting began.
The spies returned to Joshua and told him everything they had seen. So Joshua took his arm... Please purchase this lesson to continue learning.
