Jesus stayed for forty days after He rose. He wanted to be sure that the Apostles were ready for His mission.
The apostles knew that it was time for Jesus to go back to Heaven. But Jesus promised that He wouldn’t leave them alone. Soon after leaving them, Jesus would send the Holy Ghost. Jesus was glorified and returned to His heavenly Father. From Heaven, He would lead the Church.
Jesus led the apostles to the same place that Jesus suffered His agony in the Garden. This is where the passion of Jesus began. Jesus raised His hands and blessed the apostles. Then He was taken up to Heaven. A cloud took Him out of their sight. The apostles returned to Jerusalem with great joy. They praised God in the Temple.
At the Ascension Jesus leaves us. He goes back to Heaven. Just as Jesus came to earth as God’s Son, He returns to Heaven as God’s Son. He was always God and He was always man. He was both. When Jesus ascended He didn’t stop being all God and all man. Jesus went to Heaven in His glorified body. He went up into Heaven to sit next to the Father and judge the living and the dead. His work on earth was done. He had saved humanity. He had given us salvation and redemption. Up in Heaven, He sits at God’s right hand. He is still fully God and fully man. He is in Heaven preparing a place for each of us.
By His ascension into Heaven, we also know that Heaven is real. We read in the Apostle’s Creed that we believe in the resurrection of the body. The reason we believe this is because people saw Jesus do it! Jesus died, rose and then went back to Heaven. Because of this, we know that someday we’ll receive our own glorified bodies if we enter Heaven.
Jesus didn’t leave us alone. He promised to send the Holy Spirit. This is to help the disciples spread the Faith.
Jesus Christ is at the right hand of the Father. He blesses us. He gives us strength. He gives us joy in our lives that we may be able to be His faithful disciples.
Let’s look at the place where the Ascension happened.
The Ascension of the Lord took place on the Mount of Olives. Jesus spent time here before He was crucified. Do you remember the Agony in the Garden? The Garden is on the Mount of Olives. This is the place where he asked God the Father to let this cup pass by Him if it was God’s will. This is the same place where He ascended into Heaven.
This is the Dome of the Ascension which marks the place where Jesus ascended into Heaven.... Please purchase this lesson to continue learning.
