Christ Carrying the Cross
attributed to Leonardo da Vinci
For this lesson, let’s look at some of the Stations of the Cross.
SECOND STATION — JESUS CARRIES HIS CROSS
Jesus chose to carry His cross. He didn’t complain. He told us that if we want to be like Him, we need to do the same. We shouldn’t complain about our sufferings. We should accept them out of love for God.
THIRD STATION — JESUS FALLS THE FIRST TIME
Jesus wasn’t just carrying a big wooden cross, He was carrying all of our sins. Our sins were the cause of His journey and they must have made that trip difficult.
FOURTH STATION — JESUS MEETS HIS BLESSED MOTHER
Mary knew that her Son was going to die. Simeon told her, thirty three years ago. No mother wants to see her child in pain. She must have been so sad, seeing her Son hurting.
FIFTH STATION — SIMON OF CYRENE HELPS JESUS CARRY THE CROSS
The Roman soldiers grabbed a man and made him help Jesus. Jesus carried the cross out of love, but Simon was forced to help.
SIXTH STATION — VERONICA WIPES THE FACE OF JESUS
Jesus would have been hot, dusty and bloody. Veronica came forward and took off her veil to wipe His face.
SEVENTH STATION — JESUS FALLS THE SECOND TIME
Even though Jesus was so tired, the Roman soldiers made Him keep moving. The night before, He had been praying so hard that His sweat became like drops of blood. Then He was up all night and beaten. Now He had to carry a heavy wooden cross. It’s amazing that He didn’t die in the street.
EIGHTH STATION — JESUS MEETS THE WOMEN OF JERUSALEM
He had seen Mary and Veronica already. But there were other women in the crowd who were crying for Jesus. He told them to weep for themselves and for their children. What He meant was that their sins were the reason He was carrying the cross.
NINTH STATION — JESUS FALLS THE THIRD TIME
His body couldn’t take much more. He was almost there.
TENTH STATION — JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS
They took off His clothes. He died like He came into the world, with nothing. This is a reminder to us that the things of this world aren’t that important.
ELEVENTH STATION — JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS
This is the worst pain Jesus could have experienced. He suffered out of love for us.
