Christ Before Pilate
by a Master of Bellaert
Pontius Pilate was the head of the Romans in Jerusalem. Pilate didn’t think that Jesus should be put to death. He thought that Jesus was innocent. What he didn’t understand was that God is truth. There is only one truth. Pilate didn’t know what truth was, even though he was looking at Him. Jesus is truth.
Pilate wanted the Jews to be happy. So Pilate ordered that Jesus be scourged. This was an awful punishment. Jesus was whipped until all the skin on His back was coming off. He could have died from it. Pilate actually did this out of mercy. Pilate hoped the Jews would think that was enough. He hoped that they would think that Jesus wouldn't be a problem afterwards.
Remember that Jesus could have had the angels come and set Him free. Jesus let them beat Him. Jesus’ Body was broken for our sins.
Afterwards, Pilate tried to get the Jews to let Jesus go. Every year at Passover, the Romans would release one Jewish prisoner. Instead of asking for Jesus to be released, the crowd asked for Barabbas. Barabbas' name means "Son of the Father." He was in prison for rebellion and murder. Jesus was sentenced to death instead. We were set free because Jesus was condemned to death.
