In the last lesson, we saw that Jesus began to tell people about the glory of the Kingdom by stories and His miracles. In this event in our Lord’s life, He shows us all of that glory.
Jesus tried to prepare His apostles for the day He was going to die. They didn’t understand Him. Peter knew that Jesus was the Messiah, but still didn’t realize that He needed to die.
In order to make this clearer, Jesus took Peter, James and John up a mountain. There, His face and clothes became dazzling with light. Moses and Elijah appeared there. And, just as at Jesus’ Baptism, a voice from Heaven said, “This is my Son, my Chosen. Listen to Him.”
Now the three apostles knew that Jesus was the Son of God. Jesus had showed them His glorified self. Moses and Elijah represented the Law and Prophets. Jesus was what both of them had promised. By seeing that Jesus was God, Peter, James and John would know that Jesus wouldn’t be put to death. He would choose to die.
Heaven and earth were touching! We say that the body that Jesus showed to the apostles was full of the glory of heaven. We will have bodies like this in Heaven. Peter saw this glory and wanted to stay on the mountain. He knew that the things of Heaven are more important than the things of this earth. It is not that simple, though. We have to live first. We have to suffer and work for Heaven, just as Jesus did.
What do you think Peter, James and John were thinking? All their lives, they’d heard stories about Moses and Elijah. Moses was the one who led their people out of slavery in Egypt. He saw God in the burning bush, and was given the Ten Commandments. Elijah was one of the greatest of the Old Testament prophets. Suddenly, these three apostles were face to face with the most important people of their faith. They were overwhelmed.
The most important thing they heard, though, wasn’t that this was God. It was that their God was going to die for them.
