What is the Kingdom of God? Heaven. Through the whole Old Testament, God gave hints about this. When Jesus came, the Kingdom was getting closer! During these three years of His public ministry, He shows us the Kingdom in His words and deeds.
The Kingdom is present in Jesus. Jesus said in Mark 1:15 that “the Kingdom of God is at hand.” Put your hand out in front of you. That’s how close He says it is! We can reach out and enter the Kingdom, if we trust and listen to Him.
The Kingdom of God is for the poor, the lowly, and the sinners. That means all of us. All of the stories and miracles were to show us the glory of the Father.
In order to gain the Kingdom, we have to give away everything. “Words are not enough; deeds are required.” We can’t just say that we love God; we have to show Him by what we do. If we really understood what Jesus is offering us, we would realize that we must do everything we can to enter the Kingdom. Jesus referred to the Kingdom as a pearl of great price. One of the last things He did before dying was to tell the good thief crucified with Him that he would be brought into the Kingdom that day.
What do we have to do? We have to focus on getting to Heaven ourselves. We also have to try to bring the Kingdom to others. We must use the Sacrament of Reconciliation to help us get to Heaven. We must try to become more worthy of the Kingdom. We also don’t keep good news to ourselves. We must spread it! We can share in Jesus’ work and message. When people looked at Jesus, they saw the Kingdom. His words and deeds both pointed the way for us. When people look at us, what do they see? Do they know that we follow Jesus?
