The Baptism of Christ
by Annibale Carracci
This story teaches us a lot. We ask ‘Why was He baptized?” He didn’t sin.
This is the of Jesus’ work. It is a very important event in His life. This is why He chose to be baptized.
1) To connect His work to John’s.
2) To show that He understands His sinful people
3) For the Father to reveal the Trinity
4) To foreshadow Sacramental Baptism.
CONNECTING THE MINISTRIES OF JESUS AND JOHN THE BAPTIST
John preached about sins. We need to be sorry. He used very strong words.
Jesus talked about forgiveness and mercy.
These things seem very different. But we need both of them. To be forgiven, you have to be sorry. By being baptized, Jesus showed the whole world that He approved of John’s message.
SHOWING HIS SOLIDARITY WITH HIS SINFUL PEOPLE
Jesus was fully human and wanted to share experiences with us. Obviously He didn’t experience everything that we do. But He did want to know what it is like to be human.
THE REVELATION OF THE TRINITY
There are only a couple of times in the Bible where the whole Trinity are present together. Here, the Father speaks, the Son is blessed and the Holy Spirit comes down from heaven.
The Holy Spirit is not a dove. The Holy Spirit is the love between the Father and the Son. This was so strong it became a separate Person. In this story, we can see that the Holy Spirit connects the Father and Son.
FORESHADOWING THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Our baptisms remind us of this. Running water is poured over our head, just as Jesus had water poured over His head. We are baptized “In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
Baptism is the start of our life in God. This moment was the beginning of Jesus' public ministry. Just as we are sent out in the name of the Trinity, Jesus is sent forth by the Father and Spirit.
Words to Remember:
Sacrament of Baptism
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Trinity
What we learned:
Jesus chose to be baptized, even though he was sinless.
John the Baptist baptized Jesus.
This was the start of Jesus’ ministry.
Jesus was baptized for four reasons: to connect his and John the Baptist’s ministries; to share the experience with sinners; to reveal the Holy Trinity; to show the sacrament of Baptism.... Please purchase this lesson to continue learning.
