Christ among the Doctors
How could Mary and Joseph lose the Son of God? Well, it happened. Each year the People of God would journey to Jerusalem for Passover. Jesus went with His family when He was twelve. It’s hard to decide if a twelve year old is a child or almost a grown up. Back then, the children always traveled with the mothers. Jesus could have stayed with Mary. He also could have gone with Joseph and the other men.
So when the trip was over, Joseph and Mary joined the people returning home. They walked for a whole day. During this time, Mary thought that Joseph had Jesus. Joseph thought that Jesus was with Mary. At the end of the day, Joseph and Mary met up. To their horror, they realized that neither of them had Jesus. They searched everywhere in the camp. Jesus wasn't anywhere. Imagine how worried Mary and Joseph were. There was no way to talk with anyone in Jerusalem. They had to go back to Jerusalem.
Mary and Joseph spent another day walking back. They spent the third day of the journey searching for Him everywhere. Can you imagine how scared they were?
At last, they found Jesus. A boy of twelve, in the Temple, sitting with the teachers and the elders! Not scared or worried at all. Jesus was listening to the men and asking questions. The elders were all impressed at how smart Jesus was.
Jesus helped the teachers understand Scriptures better, and He offered new views to old teachings.
Now imagine poor Mary. She has spent three days in a search for Jesus. She says to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for You with great anxiety.” She was wondering why He wasn’t at all worried about being lost, while She and Joseph were. Jesus said, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in My Father's house?”
Was Jesus brushing off their worry? Not at all! He is actually giving us a lesson. Jesus is saying that He can always be found in His Church.
And the story ends with Jesus going home with His parents and obeying them. And that is all we hear about Jesus’ until he is 30 years old. That’s around 20 years later!
Jesus was completely obedient to Mosaic Law. Jesus obeyed the law by going to the temple. In the same way, we should go to Church on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. Jesus had to travel days to get to the temple. We should go to Church often and honor and worship God there.
