This mystery tells us about Mary and Jesus. Mary learns how much God’s plan for Jesus will hurt her. This is because of how much Mary loves Jesus. Mary did not save us, but her “yes” to God allowed Our Lord to become man. God could have chosen numerous ways to save us but He chose the Cross. And, He chose Mary to dwell in.
Today's mystery reminds us of Baptism. No longer are children circumcised and presented to the priest. It is different because we have a Savior. Today our purification comes in baptism. By the grace of God our sins are washed clean. This saves us and renews us like the presentation did. And just as the Jewish people were bound by the Law of Moses, we are bound by the Law of the Church.
Simeon and Anna were rewarded for years of faithful service to the Lord. They were among the first to welcome Him. Simeon’s prayer of thanksgiving is a beautiful testament to who Jesus was. Anna, who lived a life of constant prayer, was given what she always wanted. She was allowed to see her Savior in person. What a gift! We pray that we will have that reward in Heaven.
