Do you visit your family? Perhaps you see your grandparents or cousins. Visiting your family is a very normal thing. That’s why Mary went to see Elizabeth when she was pregnant with Jesus. This reminds us that Jesus is human.
Even though they weren't born yet, both the John the Baptist and Jesus knew who they were. John leapt in his mother’s womb! He knew he was near Jesus. Jesus was already making people holy.
John the Baptist was cleansed of Original Sin when Mary came to see Elizabeth. Even though he wasn’t born yet, Jesus was preparing him for the work that he would do. That work is baptizing Jesus.
Elizabeth’s reaction to seeing Mary is part of where we get the Hail Mary. Elizabeth says to her cousin, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!"
We use what Mary said to Elizabeth today too. It is now a hymn called the Magnificat.
“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever."
