Moses Receiving the Tables of the Law
by Jacopo Tintoretto
Did you know that the Ten Commandments are ordered? The first three tell us how to show God that we love Him. The rest tell us how to show love for each other. Jesus gives us the two Greatest Commandments: to love God with our whole heart and to love our neighbor.
The Ten Commandments are:
I “I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt not have strange gods before me.”
This means that we must love God more than anything in the world, more than money or even family.
II “Thou shalt not take the Lord thy God’s name in vain”
When we use the words “Jesus” and “God" in anger and hate, we are using sacred words carelessly.
III “Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.”
We do this by going to Mass every Sunday and spending time at home with our families.
IV “Honor your father and mother.”
Speak to and about your parents with love and respect. Listen to your parents!
V “Thou shalt not kill.”
This forbids killing, violence, and demands respect for all human life.
VI “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
Do I show respect for the relationships I have? Am I true to my friends? Do I respect my parents’ marriage?
VII “Thou shalt not steal.”
We need to respect the possessions of others.
VIII “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.”
This rule teaches us to be honest with our friends, and not to spread gossip.
IX “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife/husband.”
God wants us to be pure. Purity of heart and modesty are virtues.
X “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.”
Be grateful for what you have. Avoid jealousy and envy.
Since the Ten Commandments came directly from God to Moses, the people decided to build a beautiful case to store them in . They made it out of gold and it could easily be carried from place to place. The case was called the Ark of the Covenant.
