Tower of Babel
by Jan Brueghel The Elder
Have you ever been to another country where you didn't know the language? Or have you ever been to a part of a city where you didn't understand anyone? Did you wish you knew what they were saying?
In this lesson we are learning about the Tower of Babel and how we got so many languages.
In the last lesson we learned about how God flooded the world. Noah and his family were the only ones left, so they all spoke the same language. Worshiping God was no problem, because they all understood each other. But as more people lived on earth, they didn't go and live all over the world. Instead they decided to stay in one place.
Some of these people wanted to build a tower. They wanted the tower to be so tall, that it would reach Heaven. They worked together, and they built the tower quickly. It was very, very tall. Soon they would reach Heaven. They were excited because they would be famous for building the tower.
God did not like how the people were trying to get to Heaven. So He changed the languages of the people. They couldn't work together to build anymore because they couldn't understand each other. People were so confused and angry that they left the tower. Instead they lived with people they could understand. The people knew how much they needed God now.
If you can't understand someone, you might say they are babbling. That is why it was called the Tower of Babel.
The people built the tower not just to be with God, but to be like Him. It is like what happened to Adam and Eve when they ate the fruit. But they wanted to prove that they could get to Heaven without God’s help. But God proved that He is the only way to Heaven.
