The Garden of Eden
by Thomas Cole, 1828
In this lesson we’re going to learn about the story of Adam and Eve.
When God began to create the world, he started with the heavens and earth. One of the very first things He did was create light. Next, He separated the land and the water. God pulled the water together to make oceans and seas. He then created plants on the earth. The next day, God created the sun, the moon and the stars. Then, He created all the animals in the sea and the sky. And the next day, He created all the animals on earth. After, He created Adam and Eve, the first humans. Finally, God rested.
Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden. The garden was very beautiful and full of all types of animals. He gave them one rule, and that was not to eat the fruit in the middle of the garden.
But one day the evil serpent snuck over to Eve and said, "You don't have to listen to God. You can eat the fruit!"
So Eve went over to the tree, and she saw that the fruit looked good. Then she made a choice. She took some fruit from the tree. She brought the fruit to Adam and asked him to eat. Once they had both taken a bite, they realized they had broken their promise to God. They were ashamed.
They had committed the very first sin, and this is called ‘Original Sin.’ They were separated from God and no longer had His life in their souls. God closed the gates of Heaven and kept them closed until He sent His Son Jesus to open the gates for us. Adam and Eve also had to leave Eden, and lost the gifts of health and life they had there.
Adam and Eve were very frightened of all that lay ahead. When they left Eden they knew life would be much harder than it had been. Adam and Eve felt very sad. They knew God would continue to show His love for them, but the worst part of their punishment was that they would never be as close to God as they had been before they ate the fruit. Evil would try to make them sin.
After Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden, people needed a Savior. Because of Adam and Eve’s sin, all people are born with Original Sin on their souls. Because of that, we all need a savior. People would wait a very long time to meet that Savior. That savior is Jesus Christ. He died for us so that the sin of Adam and Eve might be washed away and so that we have the chance to go to Heaven.
