God gave Adam and Eve one rule in Eden. After the Fall, God knew that we’d need more rules. When the time was right, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments tell us how to act as children of God.
Jesus made the Ten Commandments shorter. He said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”
These Two Great Commandments are really one rule: we should love. It’s not an easy rule. Because of sin, we don’t understand what love is. This is why God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. He wanted to teach us what love was.
Love the Lord your God
What does it mean to love with all of our heart, soul, strength, and mind? God gave us the answer in the first three of the Ten Commandments. We must put God first in all things. Nothing is more important than God. Not even the people we love the most.
If someone we love sins, we must not do what they do. We put God first by keeping His Commandments.
Love your neighbor as yourself
The last seven of the Ten Commandments tell us how to love our neighbors. We should never do anything to hurt another person. We must help others keep their body and soul holy. We should remember that we are as important to God as our neighbor. The good we do for our neighbors is the same good we should do for our self.
Do you remember that St. Augustine used “love” to explain the mystery of the Trinity? When we follow the Two Great Commandments, we imitate the Blessed Trinity. We show what it means to be made in God’s image.
