The word beatitude comes from the Latin word "beatus," which means blessed or happy. Jesus is teaching us who the happy people are. He is also telling us that if we want to be happy, these are the ways we should act.
Let’s look at each beatitude:
BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT, FOR THEIRS IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.
We think of poor people as not having a lot of things. They don’t have a lot of money, or food, or clothes. They don’t have a lot of toys or books or movies. Being poor in spirit means we don’t have a lot of things we love more than God.
We don’t envy our friends, because we love God and know He takes care of us. We don’t get angry with our parents when we don’t get what we want, because we love God and we know our parents act out of love for us.
BLESSSED ARE THEY WHO MOURN, FOR THEY WILL BE COMFORTED.
Jesus is not telling us to be sad all the time. He’s saying that it’s ok to be sad when bad things happen. Being sad shows that we care about what is happening. When we care about something, our heart is open. Keeping our hearts open is how we stay close to God.
BLESSED ARE THE MEEK, FOR THEY WILL INHERIT THE LAND.
Meek means “not angry.” Meek people don’t get upset when things go wrong, or they don’t get what they want right away.
Patience is a big part of being meek. Meek people know that God is always with us, and wants only good things for us. They are ok with the extra work, and the extra waiting, for the good things God has waiting for us.
BLESSED ARE THEY WHO HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS, FOR THEY WILL BE SATISFIED.
God wants us to be the best people we can be. When we really want to follow God’s Commandments and live holy lives, the Holy Spirit will always be there to give us the graces we need to grow in holiness.
Since God wants the best for us, it’s important that we always try our best.
BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL, FOR THEY WILL BE SHOWN MERCY.
Mercy is a hard thing to give someone, but it is very important. Mercy is showing someone love who isn’t showing love to you. It doesn’t matter how mean or bad someone acts toward you, you must show them love and kindness. That is mercy.
BLESSED ARE THE CLEAN OF HEART, FOR THEY WILL SEE GOD.
The more we put God first in our life, the more we will see Him in everything. The more we see Him, the closer we will be to Him!
BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS, FOR THEY WILL BE CALLED CHILDREN OF GOD... Please purchase this lesson to continue learning.
