In this 4th Grade lesson, we examine the Creed on the Resurrection of the Body and Life Everlasting. God created us with bodies on purpose. Our bodies have a significant role in our salvation, and will participate in our eternal life. We will learn about how our bodies participate in God's saving plan for us and how they share in our eternal judgment.

Resurrection of the Body
Can you imagine your life without a body? How would you eat? How would you play outside? Is there anything you could do without your body?
Being a human requires a body. The body is an important part of God’s plan for us. When we learned about Creation we talked about the job of our bodies. Through the body we show our love for God in a special way. We worship God with our voices and our actions.
What we do with our bodies is very important. How we use them helps decide where we go when we die. Think about the questions you ask yourself during the Examination of Conscience. Many of the questions are about things you did or didn’t do. Did you hit someone out of anger? Did you pay attention in Mass? Did you talk back to your parents? Did you ignore a friend who needed help? Your body is an important part of these! Go through your Examination of Conscience and count how many of the questions involve the use of your body. How many are there?
Because our bodies do so much in our earthly life, they will be a part of our eternal life, too. We know this from Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. He spent 40 days with the Apostles after He rose from the dead. He was with them in body and soul. When Jesus returns at the end of time, all of us will have our bodies again.
For the people in Heaven, their bodies are glorified. This means that the body is perfect. There is no sickness. There is no weakness. There is nothing that we would call “ugly.” Their bodies are glorified for the same reason their souls are perfect. God is perfect, and in Heaven people are united to Him. People can’t be in the Beatific Vision without being perfect.
People in Hell and Purgatory will get their bodies at the end of time, too. Their bodies will do what their souls do. In Hell, the body suffers with the soul forever. In Purgatory, the body suffers with the soul to be cleaned. Once clean, both rise to Heaven.
