God wants us to be happy with the things we have. He gives us what we need to be happy in life.
Sometimes we aren’t happy with the things we have. We don’t like our toys. We think our books are old and boring. We think our clothes are ugly. When we see our friends with new toys, or video games, or clothes, we wish we had those things. We may start to envy our friends for what they have.
If we envy someone, we want the same things that person has. Envy makes us dislike the things we do have. We stop being thankful for these things. This is why God tells us: thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods. He knows that envy makes us care more about possessions, or the things we have. Envy makes us love things more than we love God.
There are many things we can do to keep envy out of our hearts.
It is a great habit to share what we have with others. Try sharing with someone you know at least once every day.
Learn about generous Saints
Many people became saints for their generosity. These holy people didn’t care how many things they had. They were happy to share with everyone.
Some of these Saints are:
St. Vincent DePaul
St. Elizabeth of Hungary
Prayer is the best thing to help us stay holy. It’s good to pray the Our Father and Hail Mary every day.
To keep envy away, we can also say small “thank you” prayers. Look around your home. Every time you see something that is yours, pray, “thank you God for…”
This helps you remember that all things come from God!

God gives us all the things we need to be happy.
