God asks us to put Him first in our life. This is the first Commandment.
God wants a special friendship with us. Being a friend means loving someone and wanting all good things for him or her. God is a perfect friend to us. He asks us to be the best friend we can to Him.
God calls some people to have a special friendship with another person. This friendship is almost as important as our friendship with God. This friendship is called the Sacrament of Matrimony, or marriage.
When a man and a woman get married, they make a promise to each other. They say, “I promise that God and you will be first in my life.” This promise is an oath. The eighth Commandment teaches us that we must not break an oath.
Married people break the ninth Commandment when they care more about a person that they did not marry.
