The fifth Commandments teaches us not to kill. To kill means to take a human life. God wants us to know that life is holy and good. We must protect life. We do this by protecting the human body and the human soul.
Protect the body
Most of us would never think about taking a person’s life. This is good! But there are many ways to hurt our bodies. We should never hit someone. We should never throw things at someone. We should never push or trip someone.
Protect the soul
This is the part of the fifth Commandment that is hard for us. We hurt people with our words and feelings. This hurts the person’s soul. A hurt soul has trouble loving God and others.
When we feel happy, we act happy. When we feel sad, we act sad. When we feel angry, or mean, we act angry and mean. We yell, or use bad words. We make fun of someone. We may make someone cry. If we do this a lot, it becomes a habit. We are always angry and mean. This makes our hearts hard like a stone. We can’t love God with a stone heart. We can’t love others, or give God to them. Without God, we die.
