God loves us. He wants us to be happy. He teaches us His Truth so we know how to be happy.
Our parents help God teach us how to be happy. It’s their job! They are the first people to teach us God’s Truths. Our parents teach us with words and with actions.
God wants us to thank our parents for what they do. Even more, God wants us to honor our parents. We honor our parents by helping them do their job. We do this with our words and our actions.
Honor your parents with words.
Our parents want us to love them. When we say “I love you,” or say something nice about them, it makes them happy. They think about it when they are sad or tired, and feel better.
Our words can hurt our parents, too. Yelling, calling them names, and being rude to our parents make them very sad. The fourth Commandment tells us we should never talk to our parents like this.
Honor your parents with actions.
The fourth Commandment teaches us to act the same way we speak. We must act nicely to our parents. We should not hit them. We should not make faces at them when we are upset. When our parents ask us to do something, we should do it without a fuss. If we are told to clean our room, but go play instead, this breaks the fourth Commandment. Can you think of more actions that don’t show our parents honor?
