God worked hard creating the world. When He was done, He rested.
Rest is good. It gives us energy. It gives us time to do fun things and enjoy our family and friends. Most importantly, it gives us more time to spend with God. God gave us special days to spend with Him
These special days are called the Lord’s Day. This means that they belong to God. Another name we use is Sabbath. Sabbath means “rest.” All of the special days are days of rest, where we spend time with God.
The Days that Belongs to God
The Sabbath day we know the best is Sunday. It is the day we must go to Mass. At Mass we worship God and grow closer to Him through prayer and the Eucharist.
The other special days are called Holy Days of Obligation. These are days where we remember very important events and people in the Catholic Faith. We must go to Mass on these days, even if they aren’t on Sunday. The Holy Days of Obligation for those of us in the United States are:
1. January 1: The Octave Day of Christmas
2. The 40th Day after Easter Sunday: the Solemnity of the Ascension
3. August 15: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
4. November 1: All Saints Days
5. December 8: The Immaculate Conception
6. December 25: Christmas, the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ
The Lord’s days are about more than going to Mass. They are days where we pray more and read more Scripture. We can also read stories about the Saints. We also try to avoid things that distract us from God. Some of these things are:
1. Reading books or watching movies with bad words.
2. Playing violent games.
3. Going to parties.
Can you think of some other things that distract you from God on Sabbath days?
Sabbath days should still be fun. You can still play games, read books, and play with friends. But you should make God a part of all your fun on these days. These are also good days to do something nice for other people.
How do we rest on Sabbath days? We don’t do extra work. Some work needs to be done. Making dinner. Getting dressed. Driving to Mass. Most work should not be done on Sabbath days. You can only do extra work if there is a serious reason. Some things that shouldn't be done are:
2. Yard work.
3. A lot of cleaning.
How many more things can you think of?
