The Second Commandment says we should not take God’s name in vain. What does this mean? It means two things. One, we must show God respect with our words. Two, we keep our promises.
Showing God respect with our words.
God is all-good. When we use God’s name we should show His goodness. We should do this when we talk about God, too. We don’t show God’s goodness when we use His name in bad ways.
Has anyone made fun of you? It hurts, doesn’t it? It hurts God, too. Some people like to make fun of God. They tell mean jokes about Him. These jokes call God bad names. They also make God seem not perfect. People will make fun of Jesus and the saints, too. You don’t show love when you make fun of someone.
Sometimes God’s name is used with other bad words to make bigger bad words. Sometimes His name is used as a nonsense word. This hurts God, too. When we do this we tell God that He is silly to us. We also teach others that God is silly when we talk about God like this.
We keep our promises.
Do you remember that God created us to be like Him? We should act like He does. When we do this, we show others what God is like. God made us promises. When we make a promise, we act like God. God never breaks a promise. If we break a promise, we aren’t acting like God. This hurts God, because we aren’t showing others what God is like.
Sometimes we make a promise to God. This is called a vow. A vow is the most important promise you can make. When you make a vow to God, it must be a promise that you can keep. If it isn’t, that vow is a sin.
