Can you imagine a world without rules? It’s hard to! From the time of Creation there were rules.
At first there was a single rule. Adam and Eve couldn’t eat from one tree. It sounds like an easy rule! But the rule was not really about a tree. It was about listening to God. Adam and Eve had to put God first. They didn’t. They broke the bond we had with God.
God promised that He’d give us a way for the bond to be fixed. That way is Jesus. But God had to prepare the world for Jesus first. This took a long time. People had to learn many things before they could learn from Jesus. One of the first things God taught us was His rules. These rules are called the Ten Commandments.
God gave the Ten Commandments to a man named Moses. Moses was a holy man. He listened to God and did what He asked Moses to do. Moses freed thousands of God’s people from slavery. When the people were safe, they didn’t know what to do. Moses spoke to God about this. He went to the top of Mount Horeb and stayed with God for 40 days. When Moses came down from the mountain, he had God’s rules.
Moses explained all of the Commandments to God’s people.
The first three Commandments gave the rules for loving God. The rest gave the rules for loving each other. The first three Commandments are the most important.
What is the first Commandment? I am the LORD your God; you shall have no other gods before me. This means that God comes first. Nothing in the world is more important than God.
It’s easy to put other things before God. We know this from Adam and Eve. It’s so easy that many people don’t know what they are doing! Let’s list some ways that people break the first Commandment:
1. Missing Mass because of a birthday party.
2. Skipping morning prayers because you are late for school.
3. Knowing more about your favorite music or movie star than you do about God.
4. Not thinking about God at Mass.
Can you think of some others?
