When we do something bad, we must say we are sorry. We go to the person we hurt and say it. We also hope that they forgive us.
God loves us. He is sad when we are bad. He wants to forgive us every time we are bad. To be forgiven we must go to God and say “I am sorry.”
When we are bad and want to tell God we are sorry, we go to Confession. It is also called the Sacrament of Penance. In Confession we tell the priest our sins and ask God to forgive us. The priest will talk to us about our sins. He gives us ideas to help us be good. Then he tells us what to do so we show God we are sorry. At the end the priest tells us that Jesus forgives us. Jesus gave His Apostles the ability to forgive sins. And priests today can also forgive sins. They can do this because that gift is given to them at their Ordination. Ordination is where a man becomes a priest.
There are many parts to Confession. It is important to do each part, or God won’t forgive you.
See our sins
We need to think about our words and actions. Did we say something bad? Did we hurt someone? Did we break a commandment? If the answer is yes, we have sinned. It is important to know what our sins are. This is called an Examination of Conscience.
Be sorry for our sin
If we aren’t sorry for our sin, God knows that our heart is hard. He knows we don’t care about His teachings. When we are sorry for our sins, we show God that we love Him.
You really don’t want to sin again
Are you really sorry for your sin if you know you will do it again? No, you aren’t. Part of being sorry for your sin is trying very hard not to do it again.
Go to Confession
You must go to God’s house to tell Him you are sorry. The priest brings us to God, and God to us. It is important to tell the priest all of the sins you can think of. It’s ok if you forget one by accident.
In Confession the priest gives you a Penance. This is a thing you do to show God you are sorry. You must do your Penance to be forgiven.
At the end of Confession Jesus, through the priest, forgives your sins.
Accept your Penance
The sooner you do your Penance the sooner your soul is clean!
