If you had to talk about yourself, what would you say? Do you play sports? An instrument? Are you funny? Is math easy for you? Do you love to draw? What would you say to help others know who you are?
The Catholic Church helps others know Her with four words. They are: One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. Each word means something special.
The Catholic Church has one beginning in Jesus. The Church is one like the Persons of the Holy Trinity are one God. There is one Liturgy. There is one body of Truth that every member believes.
The Catholic Church is a part of God. The Church is as much a part of God as your arm is to the rest of your body. Because the Church is a part of God, She is holy like Him.
The Church teaches God's Truth. Truth is for all people. The Church is open to all people. The Church has the power to save all people. The world will always have the Church.
Jesus started the Church with the Apostles. They taught God's Truth. They kept Truth safe. The Apostles chose leaders to teach the Truth after them. These leaders became the Pope and Bishops. The Pope and bishops teach and keep the same Truth that the Apostles did.
Let’s end with a rhyme to help you remember the importance of the four marks of the Church:
My Church has four marks that are easy to see.
Catholic is universal, for you and me,
God gave us Simon, John, James, and Paul,
Apostles to teach us all.
We pass on one Church, no division,
To help us be holy, like Christ who is risen!
My Church has four marks that are easy to see --
One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic for all eternity!
So, if you find yourself in a church and do not know if it is Catholic, you can ask yourself if it has the four Marks that make it Catholic. Is it One? Is it Holy? Is it Apostolic? Is it Catholic? These four marks will help you figure it out!
