God Inviting Christ to Sit on the Throne at His Right Hand
by Pieter de Grebber (1645)
Jesus’ work on Earth was very important. Without Jesus in the world Heaven wouldn’t open for us. When Jesus returned to Heaven He still had work to do. Let’s learn where Jesus went to in Heaven, and what He does there.
Seated at the right hand of God the Father.
“Right” and “Right hand” are code words in the Old Testament. “Right” means more than a way that you turn. It also means “strength,” or “favorite.” When a king really liked a person he or she sat on the king’s right side.
“Right hand” meant God’s strength. Israel always beat their enemies when God was on the leader’s right side.
Sometimes “right” means “not wrong.” Like when your parents say you “did the right thing,”
When we say that Jesus sits at the Father’s right hand, this is what we mean:
Jesus is the Father’s favorite Son.
Jesus is strong. He has power over life and death.
To reach the Father in Heaven, Jesus is the “right” way to go.
From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.
Jesus has work to do in Heaven. He is a judge. He checks if we followed His teachings and messages. When we die, Jesus looks at our soul and sees where we will go next. There are three places we could go when we die.
Heaven. People that die free of sin, or in a state of grace, go to Heaven.
Hell. People who do not love God go to Hell. People sin. Some of us are sorry, and ask God to forgive us. Catholics do this in the Sacrament of Penance. Some people sin and aren’t sorry. They don’t ask God to forgive them. They ignore God. You don’t love people you ignore.
If a person dies without being sorry for their sins, they go to Hell and stay there.
Purgatory. Purgatory is a part of Hell. It is for people who die with a little bit of sin on their soul. In Purgatory your soul is cleaned. It hurts, but you know you will be with God when it is done. This is the only part of Hell that souls can leave.
Jesus teaches us Truth. He judges our love of His Truth. If we try our best to stay close to Jesus, we will not be far from His Truth. When we do this, we will see the Father’s right hand in Heaven.
