Coronation of the Virgin
by Diego Velázquez (1641-1644)
Mary is a very important part of our Catholic Faith. She is the Mother of Jesus. Before He died, Jesus made Mary our mother, too. Mary loves us as much as she loves Jesus. She takes care of us from Heaven, and wants us to love her like we love our real parents. She prays for us, and asks Jesus to help us when we need it.
Mary wants us to love Her Son as much as she does. She teaches us how we can love Jesus by her holy life. Mary also gave us the Holy Rosary as a way for us to stay close to her and her Son.
When you pray the Rosary, Mary and Jesus are on either side of you praying, too!
The Life of Mary
Mary is the daughter of Joachim and Anna. God gave Mary a special grace so that she was free from sin all her life. The first time we read about Mary in Scripture is when she meets the Archangel Gabriel. Mary learns that she will be the Mother of God. She is surprised at the news, but tells Gabriel that she will do what God wants her to. This is called the Annunciation.
After Jesus started to grow in Mary’s belly, Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth also had a baby in her belly. His name would be John. Elizabeth was happy to see Mary. The baby John knew Jesus was in Mary’s belly, and jumped for joy. All of them were happy that Jesus was with them. This is called the Visitation.
Mary gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem. They stayed in a manger because there was no room anywhere else in town. This is called the Nativity of the Lord.
When Jesus was still a baby, Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the Temple to offer Him to God. A man named Simeon saw baby Jesus and told His parents that Jesus was a very special baby. This is called the Presentation.
When Jesus was twelve years old His parents took Him to the Temple for a festival. When it was time to go home Jesus stayed in the Temple. Mary and Joseph didn’t know Jesus was there. They thought he was lost. They looked for Jesus everywhere. Finally they found Him in the Temple. Jesus was sitting with some teachers. The teachers were very surprised at how smart Jesus was! This is called the Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple.
Mary was there when Jesus died. It hurt her very much to see her Son in so much pain, but she never stopped trusting God. When it was time for Mary to die, God took her body and soul up into Heaven. This was a reward for Mary’s holy life. This is called the Assumption. When she got to Heaven ... Please purchase this lesson to continue learning.
