The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew
by Caravaggio (c. 1603 - 1606)
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord
Who is Jesus?
Jesus is God. He is called God the Son. As God the Son, Jesus is part of the Holy Trinity. Jesus is similar to God the Father. He has no beginning or end. He helped create the Heavens and the Earth. Jesus also loves us and wants us to be happy in Heaven with Him.
Jesus is also man. The Blessed Virgin Mary is His Mother. She carried Him in her belly and gave birth to Him. Jesus did many of the same things we do. He ate food, did chores, and said prayers every day. Jesus was different from us in one special way: He was free from sin. He did not yell at His parents. He did not play during prayer time. He was always good!
Jesus as a Baby and a Boy
The Angel Gabriel told the Blessed Virgin Mary that she would be the Mother of God. As soon as Jesus began to grow in Her belly, He became man. This is called the Incarnation.
Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth one day. The baby inside Elizabeth, John, recognized the baby in Mary’s belly. He was so happy to be near Jesus that he started jumping around!Jesus was born on Christmas Day in Bethlehem. After 40 days, Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the Temple to give Him to God. A man named Simeon and a woman named Anna recognized baby Jesus as the Son of God. They told Mary and Joseph that Jesus was very special.
La Vierge à L'agneau (Virgin and Lamb)
by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1903)
When Jesus was 12, He went into the Temple and asked the teachers very hard questions. The teachers were surprised a boy could ask such hard questions! When Mary and Joseph saw Jesus, they were surprised, too. Jesus wanted to stay in the Temple to be with His “Father.” Mary and Joseph were sad to hear this. They didn’t know Jesus meant God the Father. Jesus went home with Mary and Joseph because it wasn’t time to stay with His real “Father.”
Jesus as an Adult
When Jesus grew up, He started teaching people about God. He told stories about Heaven and how to get there. He told people how to be good, and told them that being bad keeps them from God. He also taught His followers how to pray.
Jesus performed miracles. He healed sick people. He made blind people see and deaf people hear. He walked on water through a storm. He turned water into wine. A lot of people saw these miracles and believed that Jesus was the Son of God.
