The Transfiguration of Christ
by Tiziano Vecellio (c. 1488 - 1576)
You love your parents because you spend a lot of time with them and know them well. What if you didn’t know your parents? Would you love them the same way? God wants us to love Him, too. To love Him like we love our parents, we need to know Him better. Knowing what our prayers mean will help us know God! What does "I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth" mean?
“I believe in”
To “believe” means to know something because someone else told you. When you tell your parents about your day at school they believe what you tell them. They didn’t see you in class or playing at recess, but they know you did because you told them.
Who is God? God is life. All things come from Him. God has no start and no end. He is perfect in every way.
“The Father Almighty”
God is our Father because He created our souls. God loves us, takes care of us, teaches us, and tells us when we’ve been bad.
We call God “almighty” because His power is stronger than anything or anyone else! As “the Father Almighty” God is a perfect Father. He always loves us, forgives us, and wants us to be happy with him forever.
“Creator of Heaven and Earth”
God made Heaven for angels and humans. In Heaven you will always be happy, because you see what God really looks like.
Angels are spirits with no bodies. They praise God in Heaven and do special things on Earth for Him. Each of us has a Guardian Angel who takes care of us. Our Guardian Angel prays to God for us, and helps us live holy lives.
Humans have a body and a soul. God made us to look like Him. How do we look like God if we have a body and He doesn’t? We look like God when we are good. In the creation story we read, “God saw that it was good.” When we think good things and do good actions, we show a little bit of God’s great goodness. God made the Earth for us so we could use our bodies to make God happy with good thoughts and good actions.
